Mastering Sandpaper Grit Sequences for Faster, Cleaner Finishes

Choosing the right sandpaper grit is only half the job — the order you sand in determines your speed and finish quality. The goal of any grit sequence is to remove material efficiently, erase the previous scratch pattern, and stop before you waste time.

Grit Progression Rules
• Don’t increase more than 2× the previous grit (80 → 120 works, 80 → 220 does not)
• Coarse grits need more steps, fine grits need fewer
• Clean the surface between every grit change (air hose, vacuum, or tack cloth)
• Use firm pressure early, light pressure late
• Stop when the previous scratch pattern is fully removed

Wood Sanding Sequences
Raw wood with mill marks:
80 → 120 → 150 → 180 → 220

Light pre-finish sanding or touch-ups:
150 → 180 → 220

Paint prep:
120 → 150 → 180
(Paint bonds best to a consistent scratch profile. 180 grit is enough.)

Stain prep:
180 → 220
(220 grit gives even stain absorption without sealing the grain.)

Metal Sanding Sequences
Weld removal or deep imperfections:
60 → 80 → 120 → 180 → 220 → 320

Coating prep (Powder coat, Cerakote, industrial finishes):
120 → 180 → 220
(Coatings need a clean scratch profile, not a polished surface.)

Brushed metal look (no gloss):
180 → 220 → 320

Why This Matters
Every grit leaves microscopic scratches. The next grit must cut deep enough to remove them — not just shine the tops of them. When the jump is too big, the abrasive burnishes instead of cutting. That’s when time disappears.

• Blow off dust between every step
• Inspect at 180 grit under a raking work light before moving on
• Use cloth-backed sanding belts on edges, curves, and aggressive passes
• Let the job determine your final grit, not the urge to keep sanding
